LATEST FEEDS

Today I would like to introduce you to my little retro PC project. I named it "GOGbox" and it is almost clear what it is about :)

INTRODUCTION:

The idea was to have a small, compact PC that could easily start 32bit PC games that were released until 2015. It shouldn't cost too much and of course not be that loud. The built-in components should not necessarily come from the same time. It was also important to me that everything works WITHOUT STEAM.

HARDWARE: CPU: AMD Ahtlon 64 X2 5200+ (Sockel AM2) MAINBOARD: Shuttle SN68SG2 (Glamor Series) RAM: 4GB G.Skill (G.Skill F2-6400CL6D-4GBMQ) VIDEO: nvidia ZOTAC Geforce GT1030, 2GB DDR3 Ram (64bit), pciExpress HDD: 2TB Western Digital

POWER: Shuttle 350W

MODIFICATION:

Since a larger power supply unit was used (with bigger measures). The actual internal fan had to be modified due to lack of space. In order to still generate enough cooling, a special "retention module" made. So another fan (40x40)

could be placed at the CPU. Furthermore, a 90mm fan was attached to the back of the case (adjustable) which draws the warm air to the outside.

SOFTWARE: As the operating system I have chosen "Windows 7 Ultimate" in the 32-bit version. Therefore only 3GB of the 4GB RAM are recognized. But that's enough for most 32bit games. For the "Games Menu" I chose "True Launch Bar" and sorted it by genre.

I've only actually installed games for the past few days. Most of my original BigBoxes. It is not always easy to install them first or to get them up and running. But the compatibility mode of Windows 7 is pretty decent. In the meantime there are also many patches that allow old games to start again under a newer Windows.

And if a game really doesn't work, you can check out the GOG version. I have now installed 186 Windows games, all of which run perfectly. I probably won't play all these games anymore, but it's about the challenge of getting them to run again.

FAZIT: A small, compact, almost silent, energy-saving retro PC, which can start almost all games up to the 32-bit era. More than sufficient for my purposes.

Since March 2015 an almost finished GameBoy Advance ROM for the game "Frank Herbert's DUNE: Ornithopter Assault" has been in circulation, which was programmed by "Cryo Interactive" and, as the name suggests, plays in the DUNE universe.

This is a 3D action flight simulator (in cockpit perspective) with a voxel engine, in which you have to complete various missions. You have to transport harvesting machines to spice fields, turn off Harkonnen planes and ground units, escort delivery ships, and much more. The controls are well done, but the game is quite difficult overall.

The great thing about this is that it also comes in different languages. A few planned cut-scenes are missing but otherwise it is completely layable.

Presumably it was put on hold after "Cryo Interactive" closed its doors in 2002.

I'm starting a completely new topic here. Everyone has probably heard of so-called "bootleg" games. These are games that were released without a license. Many such titles come from China / Taiwan and were or are being published especially for Nintendo handhelds such as the GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance etc. Most of the time they are total botch because they just took a popular game and changed sprites and music. However, there are also some pretty interesting bootlegs at times. I would like to introduce these here. It starts with "Street Heroes" for the GameBoy Color!

THE GAME:

"Street Heroes" was originally produced for the NES in 1994 by the Taiwanese company "SACHEN" (also known as "Thin Chen Enterprise").

It's a typical 7-man fighting game that is very similar to (and probably based on) Street Fighter. All without a license from Nintendo or Capcom, of course. It is all the more interesting that they also released it for the GameBoy Color. The graphics are very faithful to the NES original in both style and color palette. During the fighting it flickers a bit and this version is a bit worse than the NES version, but it is still good what you conjured up on the GameBoy Color screen.

PHYSICAL RELEASE:

In China / Taiwan the game was sold "normally". Here are a few photos:

ROM & EMULATOR: A ROM has been dumped from the game and is relatively easy to find online. I still put it in the appendix here. For everyone who would like to try it out for themselves. Most common emulators could not start it. It has to do with it that all official games follow a Nintendo policy. The bootleg games don't always care. And actually there are toocopy-protected bootlegs . Therefore, you have to use an emulator that does not ad here to the guidelines (ROM sizes, headers, etc.).

One is called "Hhugboy" and you can download it here:https://github.com/tzlion/hhugboy/releases/tag/v1.3.0

QUELLEN:

A website that deals exclusively with such bootlegs is the

"Handheld Underground" -> http://hhug.me

The guy behind the site is also the programmer of the emulator mentioned above. It's very interesting there, so take a look.

And here is another blog that deals with such games: http://qiezei.blogspot.com/201…achen-game-boy-color.html
